ScrollFlix

ScrollFlix is my answer to scrolling streaming rows until the evening is gone. Instead of a list, you get a globe of 900 films you can scroll, drag and spin, drawn from a catalogue of more than 10,000. Stop on whatever catches your eye, open it for details, save it, or jump out to the streaming or review links you actually use. The interesting work is in how posters get onto the globe without stalling the spin.

Product focus

What it does

Browsing as the fun part: a field of posters you move through until one stops you.

Problem

What it solves

Recommendation rows repeat themselves, search assumes you already know what you want, and watchlists turn into one more pile of decisions. A big wall of posters fixes that only if it stays smooth, and loading thousands of images onto a WebGL scene is where these things usually stutter, especially on a phone.

Solution

How it works

Every poster lives in one texture atlas, with the cell size capped to the device's maximum texture size. Each cell shows a tiny placeholder sprite of its poster, drawn pixelated, until the real image arrives, and uploads to the GPU are paced per frame instead of landing in one burst. The 10,000-title catalogue loads in 2,000-title chunks, tiered by device, and the globe itself is capped at 900 titles because a bigger one stopped looking balanced and ran worse.

Developer notes

My read on it

I started with a Voronoi layout (Voroforce) after seeing it online. The maths was heavy, I kept failing to fix its performance, and I eventually built my own layout instead. That replacement is the honeycomb globe. I deleted Voroforce from the repo afterwards rather than leave it dormant. The first visit is still slower than I want, and that's the next thing I'm fixing.
